Our nine Demonstration Gardens provide opportunities for volunteers to develop their gardening

skills, and teach land stewardship to the general public.

The Gardens are also a lovely place for a stroll.  When

there, pick up the self-guided tour and enjoy!

2500+ flowers were grown and donated by Master Gardeners,

bringing the total from the program's start in 2007

to almost 7500 flowers provided by Master Gardeners!

Horticultural Therapy

In 1990, U.S. Census Data indicated that 22.5% of Union County's

then 322,277 residents reported having one or more disabilities.

Having perceived the need for programs to meet the cognitive,

psychological, physical, and social needs of people in

rehabilitation centers, nursing care facilities and senior

housing programs, volunteer Master Gardeners and Union County

Agricultural Agent Madeline Flahive DiNardo created the

eight-session Introduction to Horticultural Therapy (IHT) program

Since 1988, our IHT Program has been offered at 76 sites,

reaching 2560 children and adults with special needs.

Agencies have incorporated horticultural activities into both curriculum and activity schedules, and have planted community

and accessible gardens as a result of this program.
